The book: The Radiance of Tomorrow, Ishmael Beah

The place: Freetown

Once again, reduced to reading off a phone, and haltingly at that, because I was mugged on Friday night and my Kindle and glasses were stolen. Not to mention my money, cards, passport, favourite cardigan (which really stings) and phone – this one is borrowed. Obviously it wasn’t a pleasant experience, particularly given the resultant administrative nightmare of having to work out how to replace my passport, and the knock-on inconvenience with regard to future travel, visas etc. – but whatever, I wasn’t hurt, and fundamentally it’s all just stuff. Plus, given that I am 37 and have spent significant periods of time behaving irresponsibly late at night in a number of the world’s most crime-ridden cities, it’s pretty miraculous that this is the first time this has happened. Freetown remains otherwise excellent, despite the harmattan haze hanging over everything. (There should be more winds with names.)
